Welcome to thisismiddleton.co.uk

thisismiddleton.co.uk has been designed for the people of Middleton and everybody who wants to discover more about our home town.

Middleton is an ancient place, it's roots go far back in to history with settlements documented as early as 1000BC.  Our parish church was founded in 1096, just 30 years after the Battle of Hastings.

This ancient place has layers just waiting to be explored.  Please enjoy the site and feel free to contribute.

Be you a Moonraker or not welcome, to our world!

Points of Interest

The place name 'Middleton' comes from Saxon times.  'Tun' meaning a settlement within an enclosure, and was the original form of the modern word 'town'.  As for the prefix 'Middle', although disputed by some, comes from the hill on which the church stands, 'Mid-Hul'.  So from Mid-Hul-Tun or Mid Hill Town to Middleton.

Saint Leonard’s Parish Church has one of the three remaining wooden church towers in Britain.  The original church on site dated back to Saxon times.

Cardinal
Thomas Langley, Prince Bishop of Durham and Chancellor of England had the church rebuilt in 1412 by Cardinal Langley.

The church also contains the Flodden Window; a stained glass window dedicated to the Middleton Archers who fought in the Battle of Flodden Field, it is believed to be the oldest war memorial in existence.

Cardinal Langley also founded a charity school in his home town of Middleton; this school was to become Middleton Grammar School

The Olde Boars Head is one of the oldest public houses in the area, a stone lintel in the cellar has a date of 1632. However, there is a fireplace in the pub with the date of 1587 so its establishment is open to debate.

The internationally renowned architect and leader of the Arts and Crafts movement Edgar Wood lived and

worked in his native Middleton.  Many of the buildings around Middleton were designed by Wood, almost 100 in total. Most notable amongst these is the Methodist Church on Long Street.
