The
place name 'Middleton' comes from Saxon times. 'Tun'
meaning a settlement within an enclosure, and was the
original form of the modern word 'town'. As for
the prefix 'Middle', although disputed by some, comes from the
hill on which the church stands, 'Mid-Hul'. So
from Mid-Hul-Tun or Mid Hill Town to Middleton.

who fought in the Battle of Flodden Field, it is
believed to be the oldest war memorial in existence.
Cardinal Langley also founded a charity
school in his home town of Middleton; this school was to

The
Olde Boars
Head is one of the oldest public houses in the
area, a stone lintel in the cellar has a date of
1632. However, there is a fireplace in the pub with the
date of 1587 so its establishment is open to debate.
