J.W. Lees

The brewery was formed in 1828 by retired cotton manufacturer John Lees.  John Lees purchased some land at Middleton Junction (or Jumbo as the area was known) and set up the brewery.  The Greengate Brewery, which it became known as, is fully operational today, and is where the company still operates from.

In 1876, John William Lees assumed control of  the company from John Lees his grandfather and renamed the company J.W Lees & Co. Brewers.

John William Lees was also a member of the Middleton Borough Council and the Mayor of Middleton from 1888 to 1890, he was Middleton's second Mayor.

J.W. Lees is the oldest operational brewery in the area surrounding Manchester and is one of only handful of independent family brewers still operating today.
